A steel deck weighbridge recently required significant repairs caused by metal fatigue breaking welds on the steel weighing deck. The weighbridge (supplied years earlier by an opposition weighbridge manufacturer) had to be lifted out of position to enable the steel deck plates to be removed before the weighbridge could be repaired.
QWM’s Brisbane branch supplied and welded new struts to reinforce the steel deck plates and then competently re-welded all seams. The makeshift weighbridge repairs did enable the weighbridge to be used again but the steel plates had been stretched and distorted to the point that the weighing deck was no longer level and not able to be certified for trade weighing use.
As on concrete deck weighbridges, extensive cross bracing is critical for weighbridge longevity but unfortunately some manufacturers build their weighbridges to a price and when steel prices increase they downsize the metal beams used in their weighbridges. The weighbridge was fully tested and calibrated after the weighbridge repairs had been completed. The large well known supplier of LPG is now only using the weighbridge for ensuring trucks carrying filled LPG bottles are conforming to legal loading limits.
