Many weighbridge breakdowns are due to load cell failures and in some instances (especially on aging weighbridges) the originally fitted weighbridge load cells are no longer available. This scenario forcing a load cell upgrade where all the weighbridge’s load cells are changed to a current load cell type.
In instances where multiple load cells may have failed in a weighbridge, the usually steep replacement costs of older design load cells can make it more cost effective to replace all the load cells in the weighbridge with a modern load cell design as loadcell manufacturing costs have decreased sharply over recent years.
Another factor to take into account when replacing load cells on aging weighbridges is the associated charges for testing, calibrating and certifying the weighbridge before trade use is allowed. As calibration can only be done using certified test weight, the charges for approving the weighbridge can far out-weigh the replacement costs for a single load cell.
Rather than risking a further load cell failure on an aging weighbridge in the near future which requires the entire process to be repeated, it can sometimes be a better option to replace all the load cells if any physical fatigue of the load cells is evident. Retrofitting new load cells into an existing weighbridge also carries an extended warranty period which can provide peace of mind rather than the usual 3 month warranty on replacement weighbridge load cells.
