WEIGHBRIDGE SERVICE FOR GOLD COAST CITY COUNCIL

Weighbridge Service & Testing
Weighbridge Service & Testing

Accuweigh’s QWM branch in Brisbane recently serviced and calibrated two weighbridges at the Gold Coast City Council’s Arundel site. To ensure continued high weighing accuracy could be maintained, both weighbridges were first serviced by one of QWM’s experienced weighbridge service crews.

Correct weighbridge servicing can significantly extend the operation life of the weighbridge’s key components; the load cells.  Most modern weighbridge load cells are based on the rocker pin design and fitted with hardened steel cups at each end to allow the load cell to freely rock back and forth to a maximum of approximately 5-8 degrees. This rocking clearance is necessary for two reasons:

  • to cope with the expansion and contraction of the weighbridge deck caused by temperature changes
  • to allow for end-to-end deck movements caused bytruck braking and acceleration when entering and leaving the weighbridge

The degree of load cell tilt must be limited as the load cells can suffer physical deformation if allowed to tilt at higher than expected angles. The load cell tilt is regulated by adjustable buffers or end-stops mounted at the middle or ends of the weighbridge.

These weighbridge end stops need regular adjustment due to seasonal temperature changes and possible wear and tear caused by excessive truck braking. If these end stops are not adjusted correctly, the usual result is a dramatic shortening of load cell life expectancy.

The hardened steel cups and the load cell pendles need to be inspected regularly for damage caused by excessive loadings and excessive weighbridge movement. The entry of water and dust into the greased surfaces can also form a grinding paste and cause pitting of the accurately machined wearing surfaces which eventually requires all components to be replaced.

To help minimise weighbridge load cell damage caused by excessive truck braking, it is advisable to fit speed humps immediately before the weighbridge entry to minimise truck speeds. A correctly maintained weighbridge will weigh more accurately and cost far less in repairs than a weighbridge that has been neglected.

Accuweigh/QWM is Australia’s leading industrial weighing company specialising in the sale and service of all types of weighbridges. Accuweigh’s eight service branches ensures local state based service is available in all mainland states.
