An unbiased view of the differences between steel and concrete deck weighbridge construction. As Accuweigh is Australia’s largest supplier of weighbridges and sells both these types of weighbridges, we have no reason to skew the results promoting one type over another.
To ensure a direct comparison was possible, both weighbridge types were deemed to be installed in an above ground installation and certified for trade use.
Generally speaking, a low profile steel deck weighbridge is ideal for light to medium duty weighing applications and is the weighbridge of choice for short term projects and/or where the potential for relocation is high.
Concrete deck weighbridges are more expensive to buy, require more costly civils work and also incur higher installation charges, but are much better suited to medium to heavy duty weighing applications. The immense strength of the reinforced concrete deck almost totally eliminates any potential structural damage caused by grossly overloaded vehicles that can cause significant damage to a steel deck weighbridge.
A concrete deck weighbridge has far less deck deflection under load while also providing greater spans between the load cells. To compensate for reduced structural integrity, low profile steel deck weighbridges usually require more load cells to allow the load to be more evenly distributed across multiple load bearing points.
These are a lot of factors that need to be fully considered before a decision is made to purchase a specific weighbridge design or how it is to be installed. Accuweigh has fully trained and experienced staff available to discuss the pros and cons of both models in your particular application.
