Onboard Weighing Systems can be fitted to a wide variety of vehicles and equipment, including trucks/trailers, forklifts, end loaders and cranes to permit self-weighing of product or readily identification of vehicle axle weights or Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM).
The technology used in onboard weighing applications is usually guided by the type of vehicle being used and the accuracy requirement of the weighing application. These are various technologies used in onboard weighing systems including:
- load cell based onboard weighing systems
- hydraulic pressure based onboard weighing systems
- air bag based onboard weighing systems
- level sensor based onboard weighing systems
Onboard Weighing Systems used in forklifts and end loaders are usually hydraulic based using a pressure transducer fitted into the hydraulic lines to provide a pressure reading which is translated into a weight reading by a digital weight indicator. The accuracy of hydraulic pressure based onboard weighing system is highly dependent on the integrity of the pins and seals of the hydraulic rams.
Air based Onboard Weighing Systems are used for trucks and trailers fitted with air bag suspension components. There are two types available, digital and analog dial. The air pressure within the air bags is related to the weight placed on each suspension unit which can be displayed on either an alogue dial or via a digital display when using pressure transducers. Accuracy of air based onboard weighing systems can be influenced by temperature variations of the air within the air bags caused by operation of the suspension unit itself.
Level Sensor Onboard Weighing Systems use sensitive level sensors and electronics which are fitted to suspension components like leaf springs and axle housings to measure deflection which is converted to a digital weight reading. Like most onboard weighing systems, level sensor based weighing requires the vehicle to be positioned on a flat level surface for best accuracy but it is inherently more accurate than air bag systems as it doesn't have to cope with errors caused by air temperature variances.
Load Cell Based Onboard Weighing Systems usually providing superior weighing accuracy and repeatability, but like other systems, the achieved weighing accuracy is dependent on the quality of the components used and the installation. Most quality Load Cell Based Systems have internal functionality to negate weighing errors caused by out of level vehicle positioning. Accuweigh holds trade approvals for load cell based onboard weighing systems when fitted to a variety of vehicles to allow legal for trade weighing to be performed in many industries.
No matter what you onboard weighing application, Accuweigh can provide the ideal solution to both suit your budget and weighing accuracy requirement.
